| About Lyra |
| Lyra Belacqua is fourteen years old. She has hair that is somewhere between brown and blond; hair-colored hair. Her eyes are large and grey and extremely expressive. She is of average height for her age, about 5'3" (160 cm) tall. She is never seen in pants or jeans, a holdover from her world, where little girls are expected to wear skirts. Her knees are scarred, like she skinned them over and over in her past. She is a curious girl, which sometimes gets her into a bunch of trouble. She most recently attended a girl's boarding school in the London of her world. She has an English accent; London, for those of you who would know. Lyra was born in a world that had progressed, under a strange theocracy, to about a 1920s level of technology. There were cars, but only the wealthy had them. Electricity existed, but was again, in the purvey of the rich. Other than that, the world was similar to Earth, with one striking exception: everyone possessed a daemon, an animal-formed part of themselves, who existed as a kind of conscience for their person. Lyra usually carries her daemon, Pantalaimon (or Pan, for short) in a black messenger bag, along with something she calls an "alethiometer." It looks like a large compass, or pocketwatch. She doesn't take it out often. |
